My high school uses strip lights (in the grid) on stage, spotlights, and lights in the FOH (front of house) lighting, which includes ellipsoidals, fresnels, par cans.... and even lighting trees can be added.
But if it's a small community theater, and not a huge production, then you'll probably only need lights you can hang in the house and shine onstage, (and the strip lights if you have a place to hang them, right above the stage).
