lighting for black backdrop outside?
I'm a hobbyist photographer and my friend asked me to do some pictures of their newborn because they're broke. I'm looking forward to it, but have a few questions. I'm very new to lighting and using a backdrop for pictures. I have a Backdrop Stand and muslin black backdrop. I have a reflector, but no lights. I want to do a picture with the father and newborn. The father has reallly cool tattoos on his stomach and back, so I want to have him take a shirtless picture with the newborn against a black backdrop. I'm setting all this up outside today. It's a bright, sunny day. Will I need to buy lights? (cheap such as at lowe's) Or can I just use the reflector to create the same look? Any help would be soo appreciated!!
I don't particularly see why you need lights. A reflector should work fine as long as you can get some light onto your subjects so their faces and eyes are not lost is shadow.
The main concern you need to address is exposure. The Black Background could seriously "fool" your in camera light meter. You need to do one of two things.
1. Place a proper 18% grey card at your subjects and use the camera to meter off the grey card. Place the settings into your camera manually so they do not change
or
2. Use a hand held external iight meter to meter the exposure at the subject, with the mater dome aimed back to where the camera position will be.
If you do not have a grey card or meter, at least do this. Set your camera to spot meter and move in close to your subject and take a reading from the face and lock in this setting.
