Fireworks Photography You can find more examples
Don't let any smoke get in your eyes for this assignment. Stand upwind, bring your tripod, and capture some truly spectacular images.
Big fireworks shows are thrilling to watch and they make thrilling photo subjects. Because it's night photography, you'd think that all of the rules of shooting in low light would apply for this assignment. Ha! This hack wouldn't be necessary if that were so. In my opinion, fireworks photography is counterintuitive. In other words, my guesses for settings are wrong over half the time. But now that I've learned my lessons (through more trial and error than I'd care to admit), I can show you the secrets that can dramatically increase your odds of success.
What to Bring with You
Your chances of getting a great shot improve greatly if you have the right equipment. First, you need a camera that allows you to control the shutter speeds and aperture. Technically, you could use a little "auto-everything" cheapie, but it is such a pain in the fuse that it's hardly worth it. If you don't have a camera with decent manual controls, you might want to make friends with someone who does. Next, you need to bring your tripod, a remote shutter release (if you have one), your red-bulb flashlight, a black piece of cardboard or baseball cap, and whatever outdoor gear you'll need to be comfortable.
Location, Location, Location
I know your first inclination will be to get as close as possible to the action. Resist that urge.
Fireworks are all about perspective. Find a location that enables you to photograph the explosions without having to point your camera directly upward. Often, the best place to shoot is a ways back, and up a bit too if you can find such a position. Sometimes, a hill or atop a parking garage is the ideal place. As you scout for the perfect spot, pay attention to which way the wind is blowing. You don't want to be engulfed in smoke when the heavy artillery gets underway.
Shoot in Manual Mode
I find I get the best results when shooting in manual exposure and manual focus modes. Auto focusing in low light can be very difficult for many cameras and you’ll end up missing a lot of shots. Once your focusing is set you’ll find you don’t really need to change it during the fireworks display – especially if you’re using a small aperture which increases depth of field. Keep in mind that changing focal lengths will mean you need to need to adjust your focusing on most lenses.
Remote Release
One way to ensure your camera is completely still during fireworks shots is to invest in a remote release device. These will vary from camera to camera but most have some sort of accessory made for them. The other way of taking shots without touching your camera is to use the self timer. This can work but you really need to be able to anticipate shots well and it’s much hit and misses.

Tools for Copy Stand photography?
I have a copy stand and take macro shots of small items. I need some type of device, kinda like helping hands, that I can use to hold the objects still (and suspended in mid-air) while I adjust the camera settings. Also can you suggest some type of back drop? Any suggestions?
You might want to try a small "Light Tent" for macro photography. You can either make one yourself or buy one for under $70. I also recommend "jeweler's putty" for holding up rings and small objects as well as non-reflecting glass (usually called "museum glass" available at frame shops). By using the putty and glass held above the table of the stand, you will be able to produce shadowless images. For backgrounds, I suggest black velvet, neutral gray, and White Seamless paper to make then have no horizon.
