IFR Pilot training question?
Hi super pilots, I just earn my IFR ticket. My question is if i go and filled IFR on a clear day and do 4 approaches. Do i log this time is IFR with the approaches, or just regular time. no safety pilot,or do i need a safety pilot. Thank you.
I agree, this should have been a component of the FAA knowledge test as well as the Oral / Practical. As stated in another answer, no time can be logged as IFR or Sim IFR unless you encounter either IMC (instrument meteorological conditions) or fly under the hood (requiring a safety pilot which can be anyone who holds a valid 3rd class medical and is rated in the type aircraft you are operating and is current to FAA standards on their ticket).
So if you file a plan IFR in VFR conditions, it will be logged as visual, regardless of clearance and plan unless IMC is encountered. Incidentally - you can file what is called VFR on Top which is an IFR VFR hybrid plan allowing you the flexibility of VFR (less restrictions with regard to heading, speed, and altitude changes as long as you notify ATC) while in VMC, and then activate the IFR portion of the plan once IMC is encountered which might be only the terminal phase of flight...
