That's why I described the proton as traveling at .999c, not 1c. Also, your analogy to the falling object from 20,000 feet or 200 feet breaks down upon scrutiny. The falling object has to constantly bleed off kinetic energy to the air via friction in order to not fall faster. Since there is no air or friction in space, what will stop the proton from accelerating?
You're mixing Newtonian mechanics with relativistic mechanics. In both systems, force is the rate of change of momentum. But in relativistic mechanics, momentum is not proportional to velocity as it is in Newtonian mechanics, but can attain as large a value as you want without the velocity exceeding light speed. So the black hole's gravity will increase the proton's momentum without causing it to accelerate beyond light speed.
